EMBERDEEP 2: Evil Lurks Below
Developer Note: EMBERDEEP 2: Evil Lurks Below is currently in active development. The game is playable through its 25-depth story and into an extended endgame, but balance, content, audio, and visual polish are still being refined. It is designed primarily for desktop play with a keyboard and mouse, with mobile touch controls and portrait/landscape layouts also supported. If you encounter a bug or have feedback, please leave a comment. Your input helps shape the descent!
Important: Your active run, achievements, settings, and Hall of the Fallen records are stored in your browserβs local storage. Clearing that storage will permanently erase your saved data. Please do so with caution.
The mountain split open.
The graves emptied from within.
Something beneath Emberdeep has begun to breathe.
After an earthquake uncovers a black stone stairwell near the village, the dead begin marching into the newly opened depths. You follow them beyond the barricades, carrying little more than a weapon, a lantern, and the knowledge that whatever waits below is preparing for the world above.
Every descent changes.
Every death is final.
EMBERDEEP 2: Evil Lurks Below is a fast-paced 16-bit action roguelike inspired by classic arcade dungeon crawlers. Explore procedurally generated depths, shape a distinct character build, uncover hidden chambers, recruit unusual companions, bargain with occult powers, and battle through an adaptive underground army.
The story descends through 25 increasingly dangerous depths—but surviving the story does not mean you have reached the bottom.
β CHOOSE YOUR DELVER. BUILD SOMETHING DANGEROUS.
Choose from four distinct classes:
- KNIGHT: Heavy axes, tremendous durability, and punishing close-range control.
- RANGER: Rapid arrows, superior reach, and precise battlefield pressure.
- MAGE: Piercing ember magic capable of burning through entire ranks.
- ROGUE: Relentless knife volleys, exceptional speed, and evasive aggression.
Leveling up offers more than simple numerical bonuses. Each class can develop signature mechanics that transform how it fights.
Ranger arrows can split after striking an enemy. Mage projectiles can orbit before launching. Knight axes can return like boomerangs. Rogue blades can leave damaging wire trails.
Dashes, dodges, critical hits, and projectile behavior can also evolve along class-specific paths.
A successful run should become a recognizable build—not merely a stronger version of the character who entered.
π― NO TWO DESCENTS ARE THE SAME
Dungeon layouts are procedurally generated, but the world is more than a maze of random corridors.
Handcrafted chambers can appear within each depth, including abandoned camps, collapsed libraries, ritual circles, flooded crypts, prison blocks, fungal gardens, execution rooms, ancient dining halls, and trapped treasure vaults.
Some rooms contain timed or ordered puzzles. Others tell small stories through their surroundings. Many are optional, but observant delvers may leave with equipment, supplies, score, experience, or something far stranger.
The descent passes through several distinct environments:
- Ancient stone dungeons haunted by the restless dead.
- The lush and dreamlike Moonveil Grotto.
- The ominous halls of the Starless Temple.
- The flooded brick channels of the Sunken Works.
- Deeper regions that should never have appeared on any map.
Each environment has its own tiles, lighting, decorations, creatures, hazards, ambience, and animated scenery.
π THE DEAD DO NOT SIMPLY WAIT FOR YOU
Enemies investigate nearby combat, search your last known position, navigate around obstacles, spread out to surround you, and pursue through connected rooms.
A dynamic encounter director watches the rhythm of the run. It considers your health, supplies, recent damage, current enemy count, build strength, nearby movement space, and the time since your last dangerous fight.
Its purpose is not to flood the map with enemies.
It creates periods of tension, escalation, and recovery—then adjusts those limits according to the selected difficulty.
π CHAMPIONS ARE MORE THAN LARGER HEALTH BARS
Named champions may carry one or two compatible mutations that visibly alter their behavior:
- Vampiric
- Shielded
- Teleporting
- Corpse-Raising
- Splitting
- Frenzied
- Projectile-Reflecting
- Guardian
Each affix has distinct visual tells, tactical weaknesses, and combat behavior. Incompatible combinations are restricted so champions remain dangerous without becoming unfair.
Enemy families also feature distinct recoil, attack, stagger, and death effects. Critical hits, champion kills, and heavy impacts use restrained hit-stop, directional knockback, layered sound effects, and controller vibration where supported.
π₯ TURN THE DUNGEON AGAINST ITS INHABITANTS
The environment is part of the combat system.
Shatter urns, tables, shelves, and barricades to open new lanes. Topple unstable pillars onto nearby creatures. Ignite enemies against braziers. Charge water with magic. Set oil alight. Crush pursuing monsters beneath opening gates. Strike mushrooms to release slowing spore clouds.
Destroying substantial objects also grants a small amount of experience.
A room is not simply a backdrop. Used carefully, it can become a weapon.
β POWER ALWAYS HAS A PRICE
Optional encounters offer tempting rewards at real cost.
Cursed altars trade maximum health for permanent relics. Sacrificial fountains demand gold, keys, or potions. Occult contracts impose a dangerous penalty until their terms are fulfilled.
Sealed chambers lock behind you and unleash increasingly difficult waves. Suspiciously generous caches may contain treasure—or teeth.
Every bargain reveals its price before you accept it.
Walking away is always allowed.
π SECRETS BENEATH SECRETS
Cracked walls react when struck. Suspicious floor patterns may conceal mechanisms. Hidden switches open forgotten passages, while ancient statues can be pushed into place to uncover sealed rooms.
Secret chambers may contain restorative springs, discounted merchants, supply caches, risky artifacts, and other discoveries unavailable along the normal route.
None are required to complete the story.
All reward curiosity.
πΎ CHOOSE WHO DESCENDS BESIDE YOU
Travel alone for increased damage and movement speed, or choose from companions with specialized abilities.
Companions can fight, intercept enemies, destroy hostile projectiles, uncover treasure, illuminate the darkness, reveal important locations, control advancing packs, or provide tactical support.
Terra, a green-haired human lantern-warden, behaves like a careful second delver. She maintains firing distance, navigates corridors, avoids hostile projectiles, protects nearby allies, and administers emergency field dressings. Her help makes survival easier, but reduces the experience you earn.
Companions can be injured and downed. After a recovery period, they return to the fight.
Even allies must survive the descent.
π FOLLOW THE UNKNOWN HAND
One parchment scrap can be found on every ordinary story depth.
Together, these 20 fragments record the observations of an unknown author: the architecture, forgotten rituals, strange inhabitants, and buried history of the world beneath Emberdeep.
The scraps can be reread from your satchel, but finding them all will require exploration—and survival.
Some warnings arrive just in time.
Others may already be too late.
π©Έ BOSSES MUST BE LEARNED, NOT OUTSPAWNED
Every fifth depth culminates in a unique boss encounter.
Bosses progress through multiple clearly telegraphed phases, changing attacks, movement, reinforcements, arena pressure, and music layers as the battle develops.
Summoned creatures visibly emerge through graves, eggs, pools, or portals. Major attacks create brief recovery openings. Enemy generators can be damaged, temporarily silenced, or destroyed entirely.
Emergency supplies may occasionally appear when a struggling player demonstrates sustained survival and real progress—but low health alone will not earn rescue.
Victory depends on reading the arena, recognizing attack patterns, and knowing when to strike.
π΅ A SOUNDTRACK THAT FOLLOWS THE FIGHT
The soundtrack changes intensity without constantly replacing the current song.
Exploration arrangements gradually gain enemy-alert tones, heavy-combat percussion, low-health tension, and boss-phase layers before resolving into victory.
Combat audio is similarly layered. Armor, bone, flesh, magic, critical hits, environmental destruction, and heavy boss impacts each have distinct sound profiles.
The result is a dungeon that sounds as reactive as it feels.
π EVERY POINT HAS A HISTORY
Score is earned from more than enemy kills.
Exploration, objectives, treasure, parchment discoveries, bosses, secrets, depth progression, and major accomplishments all contribute to the final total.
Open the Score Details ledger during a run to see exactly where every point came from.
At death, victory, or Save & Quit, the run recap records:
- Damage dealt and received
- Enemies and champions defeated
- Bosses defeated
- Highest single hit
- Favorite upgrade
- Healing consumed
- Depths charted
- Secrets discovered
- Companion contribution
- Score breakdown
- Cause of death
Completed records are preserved in the Hall of the Fallen.

I wasn't expecting the game to be this good. I could actually grind this for a while, and having my own account would be nice.
Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying it. Also, great suggestion!
